It can take a long time for movies to be produced and released, that’s why a director releases a movie about every two to three years. In between release dates, the small screen frequently attracts many big time filmmakers to film short commercial spots for high-end brands because they can be a less time consuming alternative to feature films.
Michael Bay, who directed Transformers and many other explosive movies, is known for making films loud and packed with action. So why not include sexy lingerie, explosions, and motorcycles in this Victoria’s Secret ad? Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, known for directing Goodfellas and The Aviator, has directed several commercials in his lifetime. Oddly, enough a few of them are fragrance ads. Bleu, Chanel’s fragrance for men, features another Rolling Stones song, and Dolce & Gabana’s, The One, fragrance ad stars Scarlett Johansson and Mathew McConaughey, who is in Scorsese’s most recent film, The Wolf of Wallstreet. David Fincher, who directed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Fight Club, also directed a Nike ad depicting the life of NFL superstars LaDainian Tomlinson and Troy Polamalu. Unlike Benjamin Button, it was in chronological order. Director of The King’s Speech and Les Misérables, Tom Hooper, is responsible for the awesome Jaguar ad that premiered during the Superbowl in 2014 starring everyone’s favorite villains, including Tom Hiddleston and Mark Strong. Nicolas Winding Refn directed another 2014 Superbowl ad with David Beckham wearing nothing but his underwear in this H&M spot. Refn is known for two Ryan Gosling filled movies, Drive and Only God Forgives. Not only do directors film commercials in between movie release dates, but they also want to continue practicing their craft and expressing their personality in a range of different media forms.
